A Wired Family App Update: Houseparty

HousepartyIt’s hard to believe that in less than 10 years we have gone from flip phones with crude texting  — to smart phones with nearly two million apps. These devices now often replace that aging desktop in your spare bedroom. You know the one with the AOL disk that you use as a coaster.

In fact, for many of us, the smart phone has replaced our offices by allowing us to contact or be contacted 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Is that progress? Sometimes I’m not so sure.

One type of app that has caught the attention of many teens and young adults are the video chat apps. Although apps such as Facetime are still being used — they are limited by a one caller/viewer at a time capability. However, the evolution of Skype has changed video chat dynamics and generated competition with other apps such as ooVoo and today’s focus, Houseparty.

The difference between apps such as Facetime and that of Skye, OoVoo and Houseparty have to do with the ability to see and speak with multiple parties at one time. In fact, it’s much like hanging with your buddies — albeit, you never need to leave the comfort of your dorm, or for college graduates, your parent’s basement.
